Samuel Learns To Yell And Tell – A Reader’s Review

A book such as this indicates the dismal way our society has been working. In the earlier times, no indication of child sexual molestation has ever been spoken. Yet, these modern days created a shift, where many child sexual predators are uncovered on the news. As aptly stated in the concluding letter to parents, we want to be proactive in protecting our children.

Samuel Learns to Yell and Tell is a full color book that contains counsel from a mother to her son Samuel to warn him of five different ways sexual defilement could come into his life in the future. The first is when Samuel’s playmate showing his private and soliciting Samuel to also show his. Mother’s counsel is, “Now you know my little Samuel. This is truly bad. Even if he is your friend it makes God very sad. So, I ask you now, Samuel son, Will you think it’s all in fun? Will you stay, or will you run?” Samuel affirms he will run!

Evidently, the second is the most severe compared to the other four. It comes from a friend or family member who wins the trust of the family but secretly wants to sexually molest Samuel in some way and then convince him not to tell. “Will you do just as he says and keep his evil secret? or will you run and tell and yell? Will you be brave, my Samuel?” The purpose is to publicize these wrongdoings similar to what is declared in the ending letter to parents “A child predator loses his power when he loses his cover.”

An invitation to pornography makes the third. The fourth is when an older boy entices Samuel to see his private and Samuel will also show his but warns him never to tell, similar to the first situation. The fifth deals with lustful thoughts Samuel might have as he grows older. In each case, Samuel is encouraged to tell his parents what has happened. He is not to heed threats or keep “little secrets” between friends.

The book shows that Samuel is never told why it is wrong to be involved in sexual molestation and how he must interact with the other person in the situation. Primarily, he is educated on how to recognize a certain condition and what he needs to do, simply running and telling his parents on the situation.

The counsel dialog is in the form of a poem with a loose rhyming scheme. The pages are in full color watercolor drawings that make it more lively and eye-catching even to children. A great expression of a mother’s love is articulated in this book as she forewarns her son on sexual corruptions that will hurt him emotionally in the future. It also contains Samuel’s response. In case any of the five conditions occur, Samuel affirms to simply run, yell and tell.

The last two pages, written to parents, are timely and wise. They present information on how to identify molesters and where they might come around in every child’s life as well as how to recognize the detrimental actions they might do. Still, they advise people not to live in fear. We are not to mistrust everyone. Neither are we to avoid being friendly with children for fear we will be misunderstood. But, we still need to be more cautious and not involve ourselves in situations that are leading to suspicions. And we need to make our children aware of situations they might face that are too big for them to handle. Constant reading of this book will make your child be informed on the varying issues in sexual defilement and train them on what they need to do on these situations.

A sequel for little girls concerning similar issues with the title Sara Sue Really Learns to Yell and Tell willl be published later. Hopefully No Greater Joy will also produce similar materials addressed to older children as well.
