No More Books At The Newport Public Library
According to ancient Roman philosopher Cicero, a library is one of the two keys to fulfilling need. Would Cicero even recognize the new, bookless libraries headed our way? In accordance with the Los Angeles Times, yet one more library – the Newport Beach Public Library in Newport Beach, California – is moving toward abandoning books entirely and replacing them with electronic books.
Exact same space and features in bookless library
As the cost of producing printed books is becoming prohibitively costly – and market share for the Amazon Kindle and Barnes and Noble Nook continues to skyrocket – the prospect of book-free libraries has become much more attractive on the public and collegiate levels. There are so many things that have to be paid in the book publishing market as it is traditionally known. The retailer, author royalty, wholesaler, pre-production, printing, marketing and publisher all want some money off the sale. E-books are much less complicated and less costly to produce. There will only be resemblance in the Newport Beach Public Library in that it will look like one when entering. The very same informational kiosk can be located up front, however instead of an attendant there can be a computer. There won’t be any bookshelves in the library, which makes sense. To be able to give electronic book readers a place to study, it will be maintained with access to wireless internet. Sometimes it’s necessary to get a printed book. In this case, the kiosk software can be used by patrons to order them. When ordering, you have to wait a few days to get the books from a locker. This will be just like getting a movie in the mail from Netflix.
Reading and economy changing together
When it comes to having bookless libraries around, many colleges tend to be ahead for instance The University of Texas in San Antonio and California’s Stanford University. The previous university’s engineering and technology library swapped out print books with more than 425,000 e-books and 18,000 e-journal subscriptions, opening up more room for group study in the library. This process was slower for Stanford. As of summer 2010, a quarter of its 80,000 total books were changed into e-books. The purpose of book-free libraries is to keep up with patrons. The needs are always changing. Numerous studies conducted at the Newport Beach Public Library found that more patrons came to the library to use the Wi-Fi connection and study in a quiet space rather than to take a look at books. Thus, the idea of the Netflix-style delivery system was born. Not everybody agrees though.
“That caused me the most angst,” said Newport Beach City Manager Dave Kiff, who helped develop the library’s bookless plan. “People identify (book) stacks with the library.”
Staying 30 years behind is a mistake even Kiff knows. The public needs change. Nancy Acone is on the Newport Beach Friends of the Library board. She said adaption is the most significant thing, reports the Los Angeles Times.
“You don’t want to be like the railroads and go out of business,” she said.
